The Trap

The Hunt, #3

Mr. Fukada is a master at storytelling. In “The Trap” Fukada achieves a stellar ending for such an incredible beginning! Tight action sequences melded with wonderful descriptive passages make this an unforgettable novel. The intensity from books one and two builds to a climax in “The Trap”. Focus is never divergent from the story of Gene and Sissy. The book starts where it left off: at the train station.

The kids reach the train as it pulls out of the station. Many are lulled into security as the train progresses farther along. When the doors open, it is dark for a minute, and then light appears. They all run out of the train and into dismay as they look at the kids and see how they look and hear how they survive in the depth of the Palace. At some point Gene and Sissy meet the Ruler.

The Ruler has a deal for them. If they want to see their friends alive, go back to their city of origin, find Ashley June and kill her! While traveling back to their city, Gene and Sissy discuss what the term “The Origin” means to them and how it is applicable. They meet up with Ashley June and are surprised. Time after time Gene and Sissy meet near-death scenarios. The ending is one this reader did not anticipate.

It can be difficult to carry a story strongly through to the end, and Mr. Fukada excelled at this creative outlet. A more original trilogy I have yet to see. While the violence was present throughout this trilogy, never were there moments where the author unnecessarily exceeded the violence and gore. This book is perfect for a young adult reader as well as for the adult reader. In either case, enjoy!
