This is a great standalone novel with a good arcing storyline. Not only that, but the cast of characters are well-established making this rollicking tale an easy read. If you're looking for a good plot, diverse characters with their subplots, many vistas and descriptive wonders than this novel is the one to choose. There is a trilogy prior to this novel (at times there are outside references made), but this novel is the beginning of another trilogy, if I understood correctly. This novel is geared for young adults and older and is perfect for fostering the desire to read.
Adele and Gareth are in the thick of trouble when it's discovered there is a new power which might be stronger than Adele's geomancy. For the vampires in London appear to be able to withstand Adele's magic. If this is true for England, then what is happening in Europe?
So Adele and Gareth end up in Tibet to get a special stone with powers. They realize they must get to Paris as soon as possible as the king and queen of the high court are in danger. There is a plot to overthrow their rule by taking said stone and destroying the court. The plotters want to kill all who get in their way. It is up to a few to save the many. Can Adele and Gareth make it in time?
There is so much packed into this novel that I can only mention a few. I loved the Tibet descriptions, and it was easy to visualize the various details as there were plenty to keep track! This is an intense story at times, and you may need to block out time for those parts as it can keep one from doing other things. All in all, this novel is great, but I suggest for a richer understanding and character motivations, check out the previous trilogy. However, if you just want to read this novel first, go for it, as the authors do an excellent job of referencing the past while providing a wealth in experiences all on its' own.
The first Gareth and Adele Novel, The Geomancer is the start of an ongoing, character-based, urban fantasy series set in the same Vampire Empire universe as the authors’ previous trilogy!
The uneasy stalemate between vampires and humans is over. Adele and Gareth are bringing order to a free Britain, but bloody murders in London raise the specter that Adele's geomancy is failing and the vampires might return. A new power could tilt the balance back to the vampire clans. A deranged human called the Witchfinder has surfaced on the Continent, serving new vampire lords. This geomancer has found a way to make vampires immune to geomancy and intends to give his masters the ability to kill humans on a massive scale.
The apocalyptic event in Edinburgh weakened Adele's geomantic abilities. If the Witchfinder can use geomancy against humanity, she may not have the power to stop him. If she can't, there is nowhere beyond his reach and no one he cannot kill.
From a Britain struggling to rebuild to the vampire capital of Paris, from the heart of the Equatorian Empire to a vampire monastery in far-away Tibet, old friends and past enemies return. Unexpected allies and terrible new villains arise. Adele and Gareth fight side-by-side as always, but they can never be the same if they hope to survive.
