Sword of Destiny

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Excellent story from beginning to end! Hill outdoes himself in his translation of descriptive action passages and in depth character developments. His translation makes this story of Chinese historical culture a must read! This novel is based on the writings of Wang Dulu who wrote in a serial style much like Charles Dickens and Louisa May Alcott did in that time period; however, Hill's translation allows the reader to transcend cultural and historical barriers easily.

This novel starts where Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon ends. The Duke Te is dying; his last wish is for the safety of the Green Sword of Destiny. The entire region is teaming with men who want the Green Sword of Destiny for their personal use and ambitions. Yu Shulien hears the Duke Te is dead. She rushes to aid his son, Sir Te, in protecting the sword from others who would do much harm with it.

Along the way she discovers an old friend, a pupil, and a betrayer all who want to help protect Sir Te and his family and the sword. Together with these three and a handful more warriors the time for peace is over and action to begin. Hades Dai wants the sword and will stop at nothing to let his ambitions rule China the way he sees fit. In this tale the actions of one or two can have devastating consequences for an entire generation. It will be up to Yu Shulien and her friends to combat the powerful Hades Dai; if she cannot, failure will lead to death for all on this path of the Iron Way.

Justin Hill took a complex story and effortlessly gave unexpected depth through his knowledge of Chinese culture and history. This novel is easy to read (but not dummied down) which made this story fuller and complete which is difficult to do when translating a culture in a certain time period right down to attitudes and social mores. If you liked Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, you will love this novel! Well done! Kudos to Hill for adding more to the tale of the Iron Way.
