This is the first book in the “Weird Girls” novels and is it wicked! The plot is strong as are the characters. Lots of humor and it’s refreshing to see irreverence towards the paranormal. Ms. Robson does an excellent job with witty dialogue, unusual situations, and minor characters which are smoothly integrated to aid in either furthering the plot, provide humorous situations, as well as provide background history on the heroines and thus provide greater depth to the plot.
I loved how the story starts with a vampire court and ends with . . . (Who am I to tattle tale, just get the book and find out for yourself)! The heroines are surrounded by vampires, who’d love to drain them for killing one of their own (hence the vampire court). These women are then pegged by the vampires for the talents they possess (shape shifter, gypsy, etc.), which riles the women, especially Celia as they each have more than one talent (and I’m sure there’s more they can do than were listed). There is a mea culpa moment for that particular issue (payback bites).
Along the way they aid a vampire and the were clan who are trying to find the cause of a lethal vampire virus (as well as kill any infected vampires). Each heroine finds her love, but there are rocky moments caused by misunderstandings. This story is seen from the oldest sister’s eyes (Celia), perhaps making an opportunity possible for future novels to be written from another sister’s perspective.
All in all, I did not want this story to end, so I was glad to discover there is another book coming out in July 2013. However, I hate waiting that long! Also, there is a prequel released prior to this book in e-novella form for those addicted to the “weird girls” story and needing a quick pick-me-up.
Celia Wird and her three sisters are just like other 20-something girls—with one tiny exception: they're products of a backfired curse that has given each of them unique powers that make them, well, weird…
The Wird sisters are content to avoid the local vampires, werebeasts, and witches of the Lake Tahoe region—until one of them blows up a vampire in self-defense. Everyone knows vampires aren't aggressive, and killing one is punishable by death. But soon more bloodlust-fueled attacks occur, and the community wonders: are the vampires of Tahoe cursed with a plague?
Celia reluctantly agrees to help Misha, the handsome leader of an infected vampire family. But Aric, the head of the werewolf pack determined to destroy Misha's family to keep the region safe, warns Celia to stay out of the fight. Caught between two hot alphas, Celia must find a way to please everyone, save everyone, and oh yeah, not lose her heart to the wrong guy—or die a miserable death. Because now that the evil behind the plague knows who Celia is, he’s coming for her and her sisters. This Wird girl has never had it so tough.
