Another great novelist with an outstanding mixture of action and description plot. The plot is a very methodical story with tons of action in a vampire who-dun-it fashion! Extremely suspenseful at times with descriptive, complex moments with easy-to-read passages! Loads of hi-jinks and murder throughout the story. Gives the reader the sense of how overloaded with work and lack of manpower the main character feels. Every twist and turn makes the reader feel the overwhelming sense of suspense depending on which case is being worked and how the plots within plots interact.
DCI Claire Pierce is overworked, underpaid, and lacks manpower as she works the case of the Valentine Vampire and his cult. Three times her department has tried to catch this killer and failed. There cannot be a fourth failure. This killer comes back every seven years, kills three people (the time is days between each death), except it's been 14 years since the last murder. Each time there was a witness, a woman, whom police fail to reach her to find out what she saw.
If that wasn't bad enough, Claire must also contend with the case of animal ritual sacrifice and shape shifters. She's busy trying to find out where the charms and pelts are coming from, but is unable to figure it out as she is stymied every time from either missing evidence, switched out evidence or orders from above to ignore suspects as it's a "closed case" with the suspect ending up dead. Or did he? In either case, Claire feels there is something going wrong in the police, but she can't figure out who is doing the covering up and why.
All these issues make for an overall story arc with the plot becoming darker as more information comes along. This novel can be read as a standalone; however, if you love this book, there are two prior novels which you might enjoy and should provide more depth to the characters' back story, especially given the overall story arc ramping up. With this much suspense and lasting story arc of bad police conspiracy running around, E.E. Richardson comes mighty close to taking over the paranormal suspense arena. Enjoy!
Detective Chief Inspector Pierce finds history will always come back to haunt her, especially when it's bad.
After fourteen years of silence, a ritualistic serial killer the RCU once failed to catch has resurfaced. Now there have been more deaths, and if DCI Pierce’s information is correct, there are at least two more to come. Last time, Pierce’s superiors had insisted she hunt for a supernatural killer she knows doesn’t exist; the media had a field day, and the “Vampire Killer” became the subject of a best-selling book. This time she’s determined to find and stop the human culprit before it’s too late.
