Stellar action and mischief abound in this latest masterpiece by Jim C. Hines! Just when you're thinking it can't get better than this: it does! Timing is essential and Hines has it spades down! Government intrigue combined with magic book mischief makes for one hot read all the way through! Hines outdid himself once again with excellent characterizations and an implausible plot.
Isaac Vainio is up to his neck in issues, only they're not the relationship kind. A year ago Isaac announced to the world magic is real. Since then he's been busy helping build up the New Millennium: a place for all libriomancers to mingle and help the world benefit from their powers. It's too bad his dream place is going up in smoke and fast!
He's got Porters ticked off for exposing their world, family issues, testify before Congress how Magic works, and preventing the government from trying to militarize as many functions of the Porters as possible for world domination. All in a day's work for Isaac, the Administrator of New Millennium. The good news: Lex is in a medical trial to see about getting a new leg. The bad news: a group of disenchanted Porters called Vanguard is attempting a hostile takeover coup all over the world. Once again Isaac has to connect the dots to save New Millennium specifically and the world generally.
Definitely a good imagination is at work! Hines does an outstanding job selecting the books for his character to read, recall, and recapture to his advantage. His bibliography and included notes add an extra finesse to the novel. With this novel it is encouraged to read a prior novel in this series arc to retain the flavor of this impeccable story but it is not necessary.
When Isaac Vainio helped to reveal magic to the world, he dreamed of a utopian future, a new millennium of magical prosperity. One year later, things aren't going quite as he'd hoped.
An organization known as Vanguard, made up of magical creatures and ex-Porters, wants open war with the mundane world. Isaac's own government is incarcerating "potential supernatural enemies" in prisons and internment camps. And Isaac finds himself targeted by all sides.
It's a war that will soon envelop the world, and the key to victory may lie with Isaac himself, as he struggles to incorporate everything he's learned into a new, more powerful form of libriomancy. Surrounded by betrayal and political intrigue, Isaac and a ragtag group of allies must evade pursuit both magical and mundane, expose a conspiracy by some of the most powerful people in the world, and find a path to a better future.
But what will that future cost Isaac and the ones he loves?
