Tight action and suspense abound in this latest novel by Laurie Cass. There are also moments when reality seemed slowed and laid back at times. Ms. Cass does an outstanding job showing how a library isn't contained by four walls with this bookmobile murder mystery. She has done her due diligence in creating an array of familiar characters along with a few new suspicious ones. And while this novel is in a series, Cass ensures new readers are quickly acclimated to Chilson, Michigan's murderous temperatures.
It is springtime and for Minnie Hamilton it means maple syrup and moving back to her boat! But when Henry Gill is discovered dead in an accident, it is time for Minnie to dig in and discover if Henry was killed in an accident, or was it murder? Along for the ride is Eddie, the bookmobile mascot, a rescue cat who befriends Henry's friend, Adam Deering, and is a great comfort to Henry's friends. Adam is convinced Henry did not die in an accident.
This spring will mean some changes in Minnie's life later on in the year; however, now it is time to solve a few mysteries in Chilson: if Henry was murdered, by whom and why. Minnie isn't sure what to believe, but the only way she'll know is if she digs around a bit. In the meantime, Aunt Frances needed to do her spring cleaning and get her boarding house ready for the tourist season while Minnie moved out to her boat.
This book was fun to read from beginning to the end. Laura Cass does wonderful groundwork in her descriptive passages, and provides reasons and motives for whether it was an accident or the work of a murderer. Along the way there are a few moments of hilarity (Eddie is done so well I wonder if there is a twin of his out there), community issues, and bookmobile issues. This is one novel to take to the beach this year!
