This book was action packed all the way to the end! Ms. Baxter takes a love story and provides several twists and subplots to keep the reader guessing. Seldom is a main character put through the wringer physically and emotionally as Ms. Baxter did with her characters. Of course, the only character to never change is the "bad guy" and McCabe only thinks he knows who that is!
Emma Ruiz is in a daze. Her dad is in the federal penitentiary dying of cancer. She knows her dad's innocent; however, he's stuck in prison and the feds want him to turn state's evidence on his boss. Rather than do that immediately, he escapes with Emma's knowledge. Emma is worried as she knows why he escaped, but is trying her best to help keep all of it together. And one way is to keep a certain U.S. Marshall Landon McCabe occupied.
While this book is busy with twists and turns, it's the character development that is just as busy. Every time it looks like there's a pause, there's not. In addition, this novel is current and very present as today's news stories discuss gangs, drugs, and cartels. Many authors tend to sugarcoat this kind of reality to soften the negativity. This is not the case here. In fact, this novel uses headlines ripped from today and provides moral dilemmas to also enhance the story. In addition, there are enough side plots all of which make this story the more enjoyable and memorable.
Rough, tough and by the book, he's most criminals' worst nightmare. Until the girl of his dreams is caught on the other side. . .
Emma Ruiz knows her father is innocent. But that doesn't help her convince the law--not even smoking hot U.S. Marshal Landon McCabe. When McCabe bangs on her door demanding information about how her cancer-stricken father escaped from federal prison, she'll have to distract him somehow--it may as well be with a stolen kiss.
Landon gets why Emma isn't saying all she knows. What he doesn't understand is why he's putting his reputation, his case, and his badge on the line for a gorgeous person of interest. Much as he'd love to, he can't let Emma play him. The stakes are higher than either of them can guess. The only way to survive is to trust their instincts. But their instincts want more than one kiss. . .
