Greatshadow

The Dragon Apocalypse, #1

Take a band of people, a villain (the dragon), and a common goal: kill dragon; and one will find an enjoyable book: GreatShadow! Tight action, great drama woven slowly into the plot, and likeable characters make this an excellent read. Maxey provides humor, depth, and motivations to ensnarl a reader with his cast of characters. Tension draws slowly to allow more time for the characters to develop. Greatshadow is just the first book in this series.

The novel starts when Stagger dies. Upon his death his best friend, Infidel, reveals her feelings about him. This fills him with regret throughout the book as he has loved her from afar. Soon Infidel gets involved with a group of people, who for various reasons, are going off to slay the biggest, nastiest dragon of all: Greatshadow. Along the way Stagger discovers Infidel’s past secrets as well as those of the other characters. Infidel tries to overcome her past by hiding it in plain sight. There is a lot of wealth of knowledge and/or talent in what each character possesses providing a more rounded tale.

There are many adventures and trials showcasing characters’ true natures in this novel. Great discussion in philosophies regarding the “One True Book” and why or how religion plays a part in the possibility of killing this dragon takes place in this novel. In this dragon story there are many truths, half-truths, and outright lies. All of which make this a better story.

Some foreshadowing is provided, which aids in building tension, but the question of who, how, or will this group kill the dragon remains unanswered until the end. And in the end, the reader will discover this book is just the beginning. This is not a fast read; however, that doesn’t mean this book isn’t a wonderful read because it is. Mr. Maxey put a lot of attention into the details and it works. And I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Book Blurb for Greatshadow

Greatshadow is the primal dragon of fire, an elemental evil whose malign intelligence spies upon mankind through every candle flame, waiting to devour any careless victim he can claim.

The Church of the Book has assembled a team of twelve battle-hardened adventurers to slay the dragon once and for all. But tensions run high between the leaders of the team who view the mission as a holy duty and the super-powered mercenaries who add power to their ranks, who view the mission primarily as a chance to claim Greatshadow's vast treasure trove. If the warriors fail to slay the beast, will they doom mankind to death by fire?
