All I Ever Wanted

Grayson Friends Series, Book 8

In “All I Ever Wanted” Ms. Ray captures a whale of a tale with complex issues and combines those issues with a romance story. This novel is full of graphic drama making the situations more realistic. The plot is intense especially when it comes to character development. Ms. Ray’s novel is very gripping and does not become maudlin or overly grim.

Naomi Reese and her daughter, Kayla, live in an apartment. While Naomi pursues her career: elementary school teacher, she is also trying to put the past behind her. She teaches kindergarten as it is less stressful and Kayla’s kindergarten class is nearby, thereby allowing Naomi to be close to her daughter. Her dream is to own a house where Kayla can have a dog. Her nightmare is her ex-husband with whom she has a restraining order.

While Naomi is learning how to retrain her thinking, she learns a lot from her mentor Catherine. Catherine runs a non-profit domestic violence shelter where Naomi volunteers. Richard Youngblood, the local vet, has loved Naomi from afar for awhile. He starts to wind his way into her and Kayla’s hearts. Naomi tries to avoid the pitfalls of falling for a man; but as she gradually overcomes her self-doubt, love is there to replace her fears.

“All I Ever Wanted” is a novel which blatantly discusses domestic violence. It is a realistic portrayal of how the victims feel long after the abuse stops. While Ms. Ray paints a picture with words regarding the situation, never does this novel exceed the violence into gratuitous violence. If you or someone you know has suffered domestic violence, be warned there are realistic scenarios discussed in this novel.
