In general I love vampire books, and this was a quick read. If you love or know Seattle, Washington State, or Everett, then you’ll be delighted with the real-life descriptions. And yes, Dick’s Burgers are the best! What I didn’t expect was how the tenor changed in the book. About halfway through the story it became darker in intent and took the sex scenes into forays I didn’t like (think Shades of Grey tamed). But I’d say this novella is more erotic than this reviewer cares to indulge.
The story starts out great with the bookstore owner Kristen and Jai, the luscious vampire killer, sharing a body. Kristen had agreed to let a spider/demon named Herbert put Jai inside her body so they could share her body. Herbert makes it seem like he is the good guy and the bad guys (vampires) are worse. Jai only comes out when she smells vampires nearby. When Jai comes out, Kristen’s body morphs into a curvaceous, sexily-dressed woman carrying a blade (called Mr. Sticky). Vampires cannot resist Jai as she smells tantalizing which entices them to bite or have sex with her. While they are busy doing either or both to her, she takes Mr. Sticky and cuts out their heart to throw in the trash. They become dust in the wind soon after.
This exchange works great for Kristen for about seven or eight months. Then Jai discovers John, her vampire lover from previous life hosts, is back. At about the same time, Kristen is trying to hook up with a guy from Microsoft, Corey. There are a few fun moments when Corey and Kristen date and Jai finds vampires during the date. But there are a few unhappy people: namely Herbert. He works on corrupting Kristen’s lone employee Robbie (an unhappy woman looking for fulfillment) to further his goals.
There are many plot twists as everyone rushes around trying to get accomplished whatever goal he or she wants done. And the tension builds as the questions of who will fill Kristen’s body and share in the earthly delights of Corey or the unheavenly lust of John finally get answered.
A VAMPIRE'S DEADLY DELIGHT She’s a quiet, unassuming bookstore owner by day, but by night... Kristen has a deadly secret—when she smells a vampire, she turns into Jai, a beauti-licious babe who makes vamps permanently dead. To a vamp, Jai is like ambrosia. They can’t resist her. She uses this attraction, plus her super strength and her trusty blade, Mr. Sticky, to end their undead lives. The thrill of wearing miniskirts without worrying about cellulite stifles any qualms Kristen might have about killing the undead. Being Jai is the most fun she has ever had—until they come up against the one vampire Jai can’t kill. If he and Jai have a history, as he claims, Jai can’t remember it...or him. But when her work catches the attention of some old enemies—who won’t hesitate to destroy Kristen if it also means the end of Jai—this vampire may be their only hope. Can Kristen and Jai learn to tell the difference between good and evil in time to defeat Jai’s ancient nemesis? Or will being Jai’s hostess cost Kristen more than just her beauty sleep?
