A Familiar Tail

A Witch's Cat Mystery, #1

A cutesy witchy tale from start to finish is hard to achieve; yet Ms. James succeeds on all counts! This story has all the elements for an enjoyable read: great plot, good character development, mystery and suspense! Not to mention murder. Seldom do I find a relaxing, fun read with murder and witches thrown into the mix. This is a great murder plot with an excellent cast of possible suspects. Also, the plot is well developed with lots of action.

When Annabelle Britton takes her friend's suggestion of coming to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to solve some problems, she didn't know she'd be digging up familial history and catching a killer too. Annabelle discovers a coven of witches that split many years prior, during her grandmother's time, due to politics: some witches believed only family could share in their talents while a select few believed anyone could share and excel their talents in witchcraft. This cataclysm of beliefs is at the forefront of the murder of a local witch.

It will take all of Annabelle's talents, compassion, and sleuthing to detect the killer in this coven of witches. Of course all of this happens after she meets a smoky gray cat named Alistair and follows him into a cottage! Along the way Annabelle meets and makes friends, enemies, and a home for Alistair and herself.

I loved the good vs. the evil motto that simmers throughout this novel. It really translates with the spells and positive actions. There are moments of sadness, yet this provides the realism and depth needed to illustrate how exclusions vs. inclusions in groups can be harmful. Overall, there are more happy moments than negative in this book. I found it to be refreshing from the get-go, and I know you will too. So, join Annabelle and Alistair as they solve this witch of a tale!
