Sometimes human will is powerless when “the heart wants what it wants.” Grace Lynn Stevenson appears to lead a charmed life. For one thing, she is gorgeous and popular. She also attends an elite private high school, and is dating the school’s star athlete. Outwardly, her life seems perfect, but down deep, Grace knows that she is not happy. Something feels like it is missing, but she does not know what that is. All she knows is that she has spent her whole life up to this point pleasing everyone around her, everyone that is except herself. It isn’t until she meets fellow student, Sebastian Caldwood, that she begins to question the direction her life is going and what really makes her happy. Sebastian seems to help her see things clearly and in perspective. Grace, likewise, seems to be helping Sebastian sort things out, as he has his own set of problems to deal with. It seems he can’t remember exactly who he is and where he comes from. Slowly, with Grace’s help, he begins to put pieces together and realizes he is hundreds of years old. He never ages, gets sick or can be hurt. He also has a very special ability which enables him to impose his will whenever he wants to.
Grace and Sebastian can’t fight the intense attraction that they feel for one another and forge a special friendship that leads them to the realization that they may very well be soul mates or something even more. They know each other better than they know themselves it seems. Of course, as the fates would will it, there are many obstacles that block their path to happiness and love. It seems that Grace’s ex-boyfriend, Clarke, the school superstar, doesn’t like being spurned for another guy, especially a nobody like Sebastian. He has vowed to make Sebastian pay for stealing Grace, his vendetta fueled with hurt pride and anger. Grace’s parents, likewise, don’t feel that Sebastian is good enough for Grace and consider him beneath them. Because of this belief, they forbid Grace from having a relationship with Sebastian; their worry being that associating with the likes of him would tarnish the reputation they have worked so hard to build among the affluent set. Grace and Sebastian know deep in their hearts that they are meant to be together. It all just feels so right, and they are determined to stay by each other’s side. Unfortunately, more trouble is brewing, and a group of individuals with abilities similar to Sebastian’s are looking for them in order to do them harm. Still, even against adversity, what the heart craves cannot be denied.
AMBER FROST, the first book in THE LOST MAGIC series, is a very enjoyable book that captures the reader’s attention at the start. Grace is a character that many people can identify with. She has put the happiness of others ahead of her own for so long, that she has forgotten about her own happiness. You can’t help but be happy for her when she finally begins to think more about herself and become stronger and more assertive with others. Sebastian has awakened this new side in Grace and seems to complete her. With him, she doesn’t feel like there is a void in her soul and she is happy for the first time in a very long time. Grace in turn, has also given Sebastian a hope for the future that he has not had for quite a while.
The relationship between the two characters is told in such a way that you can’t help but be affected by the tenderness and selflessness that both display for one another. Their intimate moments are very romantic and touching, but told in such a way that both characters’ moral standards are respected.
Overall, I thought this was an excellent book and one that I would definitely love to read again. It will leave the reader craving more stories about Sebastian and Grace. Lucky for us, there will be more to come in this series. I would recommend this book to all who are fans of young adult paranormal romance. One would be hard-pressed not to fall in love with this story and these characters.
