Slow Cooking All Year Round by Gooseberry Patch is a collection of simple slow cooker recipes submitted by readers willing to share their family recipes. I tried four recipes and had satisfactory results, which is a high compliment because I’m the type of cook who struggles to boil water.
Cabbage Patch by Jennifer Crisp (page 135) cost $19.31 worth of ingredients. This was my wild card recipe. It sounded good but I didn’t really know how it would turn out. There are four ingredients where their quantity was “to taste” and I believe finding the right balance is essential to the success of the dish.
Donna’s Green Chile Stew by Donna Wilson (page 22) cost $18.15 worth of ingredients. The recipe was extremely filling. I used Trader Joe’s Middle Eastern Flatbread instead of flour tortillas because it was thicker and held the stew better.
The Shamrock Breakfast Bake by Julianne Saifullah (page 61) cost $12.11 worth of ingredients. The recommended seven hours of cooking, on low heat, was a bit too long for my cooker but I didn’t mind a little crisp to the corner edges. The leftovers were just as tasty reheated the next day.
I selected the Summer Berry Cobbler recipe by JoAnn (Page 155) because it was the closest recipe to the image on the book cover. The cobbler was extremely easy to prepare and delicious. It cost $14.95 worth of ingredients but my fresh berries were expensive because I cooked this recipe in the wrong season.
On the bottom half of the pages, there are a variety of general helpful hints. Since the recipes lack photos and the instructions are short, I would have preferred the helpful hints to be related to the recipes. Also, it would have been useful if they noted the size of the slow cooker they used for their recipes as I had to modify several of them to fit the ingredients inside my slow cooker.
