Meet Your Baker

A Bakeshop Mystery, #1

Meet your Baker is the scrumptious debut novel by Ellie Alexander, which will delight fans of cozy mysteries with culinary delights. This book checks off most of my required boxes for this type of novel; there is a cast of interesting characters, delicious descriptions of food (with recipes in the back section) and a page turning murder mystery where the villain is an actual suspect and not someone who shows up on the last pages of the story. The only area which I had hoped would get more development was the romance department. Her relationship with her separated husband was all consuming to her while the readers where waiting for more progress with her rekindled friendship with her law enforcement ex-boyfriend.

This book is an all-around solid effort, rich with a fun location and interesting people. The story is set in Ashland, Oregon, a real place where their main source of revenue is tied into the annual Shakespeare Festival. You don’t have to be a Shakespeare enthusiast to enjoy the jokes, like the names of the stores or that the main character’s name is Juliet. All of the characters are engaging and readers will want to know more about their lives. Based on the place and people, I can see these books becoming a successful series.
