Princess Bride is one of my favorite movies of all time so I was ecstatic to hear that actor Cary Elwes decided to write a book about his movie experience called As You Wish, Inconceivable Tales from the Making of the Princess Bride.
Even though Cary isn’t a professional writer, he went above and beyond to make this book special for fans. For example, when he shared a tale from the set, he would invite those involved to add their comments in side bars so readers felt like they were included into an inside joke. I must admit that my favorite stories were about Andre the Giant. The warmth and compassion Cary extended to all his cast and crew were greatly multiplied when sharing a story about Andre.
On December 17th, Cary made an appearance at my local bookstore. They were expecting 800 people but 2,000 people showed up to hear him share his stories about a movie that was released over 25 years ago. It was one thing to read about his experiences but quite another to hear him, using a variety of accents and with perfect comedic timing. At the end of the event, I was able to shake the hand of the man who played a character that set-up unrealistic romantic expectations about men for my entire life. Now I can say that my sweet Westley and Cary are both fantastic gentlemen and Cary’s book will bring forth nostalgic longing to watch the movie over again.
From actor Cary Elwes, who played the iconic role of Westley in The Princess Bride, comes a first-person account and behind-the-scenes look at the making of the cult classic film filled with never-before-told stories, exclusive photographs, and interviews with costars Robin Wright, Wallace Shawn, Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest, and Mandy Patinkin, as well as author and screenwriter William Goldman, producer Norman Lear, and director Rob Reiner.
The Princess Bride has been a family favorite for close to three decades. Ranked by the American Film Institute as one of the top 100 Greatest Love Stories and by the Writers Guild of America as one of the top 100 screenplays of all time, The Princess Bride will continue to resonate with audiences for years to come.
Cary Elwes was inspired to share his memories and give fans an unprecedented look into the creation of the film while participating in the twenty-fifth anniversary cast reunion. In As You Wish he has created an enchanting experience; in addition to never-before seen photos and interviews with his fellow cast mates, there are plenty of set secrets and backstage stories.
