Liliana Claremont is on a mission to find the truth about the death of her father and bring his killer to justice. She has never been interested in society or looking for a husband to take care of her, but finds solace in her scientific experiments to help others. One day, she discovers letters that were written by her father just before his death which leads her to the Stratford family seal. When the opportunity arises for her to attend a party for potential brides for the Earl of Stratford, Liliana agrees to attend so she can discover the identity of the person her father was corresponding with before his death.
Geoffrey Wentworth, the Earl of Stratford, gets called home to find that his mother has scheduled a party for him to find a potential wife without his knowledge. He would rather be working on legislation to help his fellow soldiers find a better way of life after the war than looking for a potential bride. When he meets Liliana at the party, he finds someone that instantly aggravates him but can’t help the intense feelings of attraction toward her. The more time that the two spend together burns the flames of desire as Liliana learns more about the death of her father. She soon discovers that both her and Geoffrey’s life may be in danger from the person that was involved in her father’s death as they get closer to finding the truth.
This book is the first in the Veiled Seduction series and I stayed up all night reading it. Liliana was a wonderful heroine and was so vastly different than the other historic heroines that I have read before. She was more interested in her scientific experiments and studying chemistry than finding a husband. She wanted to be a healer which was unheard of and I just loved that she was so independent and intelligent for a woman at that time. Geoffrey was the perfect match for her because they were both independent but they were also looking to help others have a better life. They were both working to achieve a common goal and they made the perfect romantic partnership. The passion and desire between the two was evident even when Liliana was doing her best to annoy Geoffrey.
I also enjoyed the mystery aspect of the story where Liliana was investigating the death of her father and trying to break the code of his mysterious letters. She knew that she was putting her life in danger searching the Stratford home but she had to find the pieces of the puzzle to bring his killer to justice. This was a fantastic book and I still can’t stop thinking about it. Looking forward to reading Sweet Deception later this year and Heather Snow is definitely an author to watch.
