One of the things that I love about Heather Snow is her ability to write beautiful, intelligent heroines that are an absolute delight to read. In her last book, Sweet Enemy, she wrote about a chemist while Emma in Sweet Deception is a mathematician and criminologist, which is so refreshing for the time period. Her characters are very resourceful and an equal adversary to any hero in the story and I just can’t get enough of her writing. I enjoyed the fact that Emma would say certain phrases incorrectly with hilarious results and Derick would find himself having to correct her.
This was another great read for me with a murder mystery wrapped up in the middle of an espionage tale. Derick was a courageous hero looking to complete his last mission for the British but I always felt that he kept sticking his foot in his mouth in regards to Emma. He was very attracted to her while Emma thought her intelligence was a turnoff to possible suitors. He always seemed to say the wrong thing at the wrong time when the two of them absolutely belonged together. My only complaint about the book was the continuing misunderstanding between Emma and Derick about his true feelings that dragged on a little big longer than I would have liked it to.
This is the second book in Heather Snow’s Veiled Seduction series and I enjoyed this novel just as well as her first. I can’t wait to see which amazing intelligent heroine she introduces in her next novel, Sweet Madness, and I hope that Ms. Snow writes many wonderful novels for years to come.
Derick Aveline has returned to his childhood home in England after serving several years as a spy with the determination to finish one last mission. There is a traitor working from his hometown delivering secrets to the French and he will do everything in his power to discover their identity. What he finds when he returns home is a murder of one his household maids and his childhood friend, Emma Wallingford, in the middle of the investigation. He used to consider Emma a pest but she has grown into a beautiful intelligent woman that sets his blood on fire. As the clues lead closer to Emma’s family being involved in treason, Derick is afraid of what he may actually uncover and the increasing attraction to Emma may put more than just his heart at stake.
In the dark, the greatest lover can become the most dangerous conspirator...
Lord Frederick Aveline, otherwise known as Derick, has successfully kept up appearances as an English nobleman. What no one knows is that he's a full-blooded Frenchman--a double agent for the British against the French. But there is something else no one knows about Derick. Deciding to leave behind his days of espionage, he's arrived home in Derbyshire to finish one final order of business: to find and expose a dangerous traitor in their midst.
But Aveline Castle holds its own share of secrets--including murder--and an unexpected lure in the brilliant and fiesty Emma Wallingford. Emma's loyalty lies with acting as the town's magistrate, and she doesn't welcome an unanticipated, though appealing, intrusion like Derick's. As the two of them are drawn closer, the sordid past of Derick's family comes to light, as does the true nature of his arrival.
But when deception, however sweet, is the name of the game, no one can be trusted. And every love--and every life--is at risk.
