Firelight

Darkest London, #1

Miranda Ellis has been born with a supernatural gift that she has desperately been trying to control since a very young age. Because of an innocent mistake as a child that caused her family to lose their wealth, Miranda is forced to marry a man that most of London considers a monster. Lord Benjamin Archer is a man tormented and has to hide his disfigured face behind a black mask and is unable to show his true face to anyone, including his beautiful new bride. When a series of gruesome murders take place in London by a masked man, Lord Archer becomes the number one suspect. Miranda will do anything to protect the man that has captured her heart and with the help of the few remaining friends of Archer, she sets on a mission to prove his innocence. What she finds out about his true nature and what he must become to save himself could be the very thing that destroys them both.

This book was an absolutely captivating novel filled with mystery and romance that held me in its clutches until the very end. It’s beautifully written with a haunting love story against the backdrop of the dark side of London. You get two wonderfully strong characters that are tormented by their abilities yet yearn for the love and affection of another. From the moment that Miranda and Archer first met on a darkened London street by sheer chance, their lives would never be the same because two kindred souls had finally found each other.

I have never read a novel such as this where both of the main characters were trying to hide who they truly are from the rest of the population instead of embracing those gifts as in previous novels. Archer and Miranda are a perfect match for one another even though they were afraid that they would cause the destruction of the other. To me, Miranda was a character that was full of life and her mere presence radiated light whenever she entered a room, while Archer was the epitome of darkness hiding in shadows and behind a mask.

Kristen Callihan is an author to watch and has created one of the most thrilling books I have ever read. The story of Miranda and Archer is a delight for readers who enjoy both romance and the paranormal. I can’t wait to read the next installment in the Darkest London series.
