Demons Are a Girl's Best Friend

Maggie O’Malley has seen her share of dangerous situations. After being banished from the Witch Academy with six other witches many years ago, Maggie spends her time as a paranormal enforcement agent for the Hellion Guard. She is sent on a routine assignment to arrest a Bloater that has been hanging out at the infamous club Damnation Alley. Things don’t go exactly as planned and Maggie finds herself face-to-face with the club’s sexy owner, Declan.

Declan is the new owner of Damnation Alley after the previous owner disappeared at the hands of a Hellion Guard. Half human/half fire-demon, Declan is trying to prove himself to the other demons as the rightful owner of the club and to protect his half-sister Anna from any harm. When Maggie and Declan first meet sparks fly and Maggie is surprised that Declan makes her heart yearn for something more. Being a 700-year-old witch, Maggie feels that the time for a relationship and a possible family has long passed so she isn’t sure what to make of these feelings for Declan.

The two end up working together on an assignment to protect a prophetic teenage girl from Mayan demons that want to use her for a religious sacrifice. If the Mayans get a hold of the girl, they will be able to release an enemy only known as “The Destroyer,” who will wreak destruction and mayhem onto the world. Maggie and Declan aren’t the best of partners due to their feelings for each other, but hopefully they can save the world from the Mayans without killing each other first.

I’ve been reading the Linda Wisdom “Hex” novels for a while now and I have to say that Demons are a Girl’s Best Friend is my absolute favorite. Maggie is the type of character that you instantly care about and want her to find the love and happiness that she has been searching for. She is tough as nails as a Hellion Guard but has a softer side as well that very few people get to be witness. I could understand her dilemma with Declan because she was attracted to a demon even though she shouldn’t be and wanted a relationship with someone despite the fact that she was 700 years old and that opportunity may have already passed her by.

I also enjoyed Declan and he was the perfect guy to be with Maggie. He understood what it felt like to be alone and trying to prove yourself to other people. The scenes between the two of them were hilarious as well as steamy and romantic. The secondary cast of characters such as Courtney, Sybil and the hopeless romantic spider, Elle, made this novel a great read that I was very sad to see come to an end. I heard Maggie makes an appearance in Linda Wisdom’s upcoming novel and I can’t wait to see what Maggie and the gang are up to next.

Declan will be damned if he’ll allow his demon race to be blamed for the malicious acts of some evil Mayans.
