Adelaide Ward is considered a spinster at age twenty-seven and has always looked out for the welfare of her family. Her brother is in debtor's prison and she is in charge of her younger sister and nephew while trying to prevent her family from being thrown out of their home into the cold streets. After a four month courtship, the respectable Sir Robert Maxwell has made it known that he will make an offer of marriage to Adelaide and help wipe away all her family's debt. Adelaide doesn't particularly care for Sir Robert but will do what she has to for the well-being of her family.
Connor Brice meets Adelaide at a house party and shortly afterwards puts her in a compromising position by kissing her in broad daylight in front of several townspeople. Connor is the illegitimate brother of Sir Robert and would do anything to get Adelaide to not accept Sir Robert's proposal of marriage even by offering to marry her instead. Little by little, Adelaide learns that Sir Robert isn't what he appears to be and actually is the reason that Adelaide's brother is in prison. When Adelaide confronts Sir Robert, he gets angry and attacks her but further harm is prevented when her sister, Isobel, gives Adelaide their father`s pistol to make Sir Robert leave their home.
Adelaide then decides to accept Connor's hand in marriage to help her family and to protect her reputation since she was compromised. She learns that Connor is not only handsome but wealthy and charming as well. He has fallen in love with Adelaide and will do everything to make this a loving marriage and provide for her family. Adelaide is fond of Connor but now Connor must do everything in his power to try to capture Adelaide's heart as well.
I loved this book. Adelaide was a strong character that wasn't going to back down from anything when it meant protecting and providing for her family. Connor was ruggedly handsome but he was also gentle and charming to Adelaide as well. The chemistry between the two of them was amazing and I could understand why Adelaide would fall for Connor. He was the perfect hero that would do anything for the love of his life. The story of when Connor first saw Adelaide when he was in prison and her torn jacket was great. Not many men remember what you were wearing when you first met but he remembered everything about Adelaide even before he knew her name. An Unexpected Gentleman is very touching and romantic.
Adelaide Ward has but one goal-to obtain an offer of marriage from the respectable, if unappealing, Baron Maxwell. But it's the devilishly handsome Connor Brice who captures her imagination-and a kiss in broad daylight-in front of a dozen members of the ton. Now Adelaide must decide if the charming scoundrel who stole away her reputation might still be trusted with her heart. Because Brice is after more than Adelaide's affection: he wants revenge on the baron.
