Monica Albertson has grown to love the tiny town of Cranberry Cove, Michigan and her life on Sassamanash Farm! She enjoys helping her brother Jeff, run his farm, by handling the farm’s finances and creating delicious food from the farm’s own cranberries to sell.
January is a tough time for any business in Cranberry Cove, with no tourists around. So, Mayor Preston Crowley comes up with the idea of the Winter Walk celebration, to bring the tourists and their money back to the town. Monica then decides that opening up a farm stand downtown during Winter Walk, would be a great way to sell her cranberry goodies, and make more money for the farm.
While setting up the stand, Monica’s mother, Nancy, calls her to say that she is coming to Cranberry Cove for a visit. Monica knows that Nancy, and Gina, (her stepmother), are like oil and water, and should not mix! When they both tell Monica about the new man in their lives, Monica is shocked to learn that they are both seeing Mayor Crowley! This spells trouble for Monica. How can she keep each of them from finding out about the other’s relationship with Mayor? But life gives Monica more trouble, when Mayor Crowley’s dead body, shows up in a runaway sleigh, during Winter Walk’s opening ceremony!
Will Monica be able to sift through all the suspects in time, to clear Nancy and Gina of Mayor Crowley’s murder? Or will she become buttonholed by the killer?
“Berry the Hatchet” is the second book in the Cranberry Cove Mystery series. It is a delightful follow up to the first book, “Berried Secrets”! It is well-written and very believable. I just wish the murder mystery had been more difficult. I did really enjoy spending time in Cranberry Cove, and getting to revisit with old friends, like Monica, Greg Harper, and the VanVelsen sisters! I also enjoyed meeting new people like Edith DeHamer and Tempest Storm!
Peg Cochran has given us another amazing book, in this spectacular series! “Berry the Hatchet” is so engaging, that even with the 90 degree temperatures outside, I could still feel the icy chill of the wind, coming off Lake Michigan! I am looking forward to seeing, what lies ahead, for Monica, Greg, Jeff, and all the fantastic folks of Cranberry Cove!
