Amanda Weaver is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors! “A Reluctant Betrothal”, the third in the Grantham Girls series, is another riveting read! Weaver gives us another wonderful and interesting set of characters. Again, we get a brief background of each character which gives them great depth and adds to their development.
Grace is an interesting, strong, and resilient lead. She has firm sense of honor – quite like her match Julian – but longs for freedom and independence. Julian is living in the shadow of the past and wants to right past wrongs. The mutual desire between these two characters puts a kink in their well-laid plans and ambitions.
There are some really powerful moments in the book, and some marvelous scenes, full of sharp dialogue. Some of the characters are great fun and add a nice touch of lightness to the novel. Grace’s financial situation is drawn in a realistic and relatable manner, and I felt for her every step of the way.
Weaver keeps up her history of descriptive scenes, witty dialogue, great pace, and sizzling chemistry. She writes the kind of books I want to read again and again! Sexy and charming, A Reluctant Betrothal was another fantastic story!
Grace Godwyn has always known that a love match was not in her future. After her father left their family destitute, she was determined to find a match based in financial security. So she is quite relieved when she gets engaged to a suitable young man. That is until she meets her fiancé’s best friend. Only once in her life had she ever given into to recklessness and passion, and now the past has come back to haunt her!
Julian St. James can’t believe that his best friend is set to marry the mystery woman he’d met, and kissed, in a French alleyway. But now he knows all about Miss Grace Godwyn – a penniless orphan set out to make a good match – a fortune hunter! He’s not about to let his closest friend be entrapped by a woman of such low scruples. No matter how desirable she may be.
As Grace and Julian spend more time together, they realize that their desire was not extinguished in the one reckless night. Their passion grows stronger by the day, and soon proves irresistible. But Grace knows that she and Julian would never be a good match. And so she determines to go through with her reluctant betrothal… no matter how much it might break it heart.
From the seaside villas of France to the sumptuous drawing rooms of London's Victorian aristocracy comes a tale of star-crossed lovers desperate to escape their irresistible—and terribly inconvenient—passion When Grace Godwyn is introduced to her soon-to-be fiancé's closest friend, she can hardly keep from fainting. The man whose angry gaze confronts her is none other than the handsome stranger who came to her aid in a dark French alleyway. The stranger with whom she'd shared a moment of reckless passion. And now, with a single word, he could destroy her one chance for security. Julian St. John, Lord Knighton, owes his friend too much to allow him to fall into the clutches of a craven fortune hunter. He knows all he needs to know of Grace Godwyn: that she's the orphaned and penniless daughter of a disgraced viscount; that her lips taste incomparably sweet. There is no way he is going to allow this marriage to take place. Yet the more time Julian and Grace are forced to spend in each other's company, the more irresistible their desire grows—and the more devastating the potential consequences.
