Author Maynard Sims has done it again! Mother of Demons, book 5 of the Department 18 novels, is another solid gold hit! I honestly don’t know how they keep them coming, but please, keep it up! This brilliant novel starts off fast and never once slows down. This novel centers on some beloved characters from previous Department 18 books that haven’t been too prominent before, Vi (Violet) Bulmer, and Harry Bailey. Several new characters are also introduced, and each one is highly intriguing, as well as majorly broken, mainly mentally. This is a perfect novel for a stormy night, or a dark and eerie castle, if you happen to have one handy ;) !
Violet Bulmer’s granddaughter Alice is missing. She’s apparently run off with a real slime by the name of Erik Strasser. Vi (to her friends) knows she’s been hooked on meth, and that Strasser’s the one responsible. But where have they gone? Vi calls in one of her oldest friends, Harry Bailey, of Department 18, for help. Harry knows that, on the surface, this isn’t a Department 18 case, but as they dig deeper, he starts to think differently. Working with Vi, her sometimes partner Jason, and one other member from Department 18, John McKinley, the hunt begins. As they dig deeper, they discover that Erik Strasser is not really Erik Strasser. He’s also the leader of a cult in London, and all around them, people begin dying, in strange and horrifying ways. But all the witnesses report one common thing among all of the deaths: a young, beautiful, blond girl with striking blue eyes. Vi is certain it’s her Alice. But is she still being controlled by he who would be Strasser? Or is this something altogether infinitely more sinister?
The hunt is on!
Alice Logan has gone missing, and Harry Bailey and Department 18 have been called to help find her. The main suspect is Anton Markos, a satanic cult leader who has a predilection for young women like Alice. Members of Markos’s cult start turning up dead—shredded by what seems to be a wild animal. Is there a madman within the cult? Or is it something far more horrible?
Can Department 18 discover the impossible truth and end the spree of murder, insanity and carnage? Or will they become the prey?
