The story begins slowly and builds up the characters. At first I thought it would be another "who-done-it" mysteries that follow a general outline, but the budding romance between Kate and Hayden adds a little spice and the supporting characters add humor and heart. There is a good deal of action and fighting--and not just with the male protagonist. Kate is a kick-butt character when forced to fight. The ending is a surprise (as a good mystery should be) but with little foreshadowing, leaving the reader bemused and befuddled. Overall an enjoyable read.
