Phoenix

The Peradon Fantasy Series Book 1

Princess Violetta of the flame realm is having difficulty dealing with her mother and brother's death. She's given to rebelling against her father, the King. When she meets Ryore of the Frost kingdom, the fire kingdom's enemy, she falls head over heals in love. She runs away to be with him and before long they are married, but things become dangerous and difficult for her and she'll have to learn how to become powerful if she wants to live.

I found it difficult to sympathize with any of the characters. While Violetta is rebellious, she's not very passionate or fiery. She's passive and whines a lot. Ryore is not cold and calculating as I would expect from a frost king. He's angry and temperamental and will kill people while having a tantrum. Some of the other characters also had strange behavior that did not fit the scene.

I would have also liked it if more of the characters used their powers. These people are able to wield powers from whichever realm they live in, but the only one to use them with some frequency was Ryore. The King used his a few times, mostly as a parlor trick and Violetta used hers only on accident. If I had use of powers, I would use them all the time. The use of powers would also make more sense in some situations, like when they went to the funeral. The Earth realm could have simply opened up the ground for the casket, instead, people dug with shovels and they had to lower the casket...why?

The story does have potential to be great. They idea of these magical areas that are filled with magic and wonder is very intriguing. Powerful wielders of this magic on opposite sides would be epic. The classic Romeo and Juliet star-crossed love story with Fire and Frost sounds heartbreaking, And the specific seasons that only occur in each realm could be interesting if the ways ever become open between groups.

Overall, it has some great creative ideas and is on the right path but it needs some character building for the most part.

No power is greater than the one you’re willing to sacrifice.

Princess Violetta Flame lives her life according to rule, but those rules require her to pay a heavy price. Haunted by a devastating loss, she longs for freedom. When a handsome ruler takes a special interest in her, she senses greater things lie ahead, but behind the handsome façade lies a dark secret – one that can usurp her efforts and cast her back into the life she detested.

The throne was never promised to Emperor Ryore Frost, but now that he has ultimate power, his world is filled with possibilities. Citizens bow at his feet, but their fleeting adoration is no match for his obsession with the young Flame Princess. As his feelings for the staunchly independent princess grow, a new threat emerges, bent on undermining his efforts and betraying his sensibilities.

When past tragedies, malevolent behaviour, and strong wills collide, which will reign supreme?
