What an interesting shifter story. I am a fan of shifter books and have read many but I think this might be the first one I have read where the main protagonist is at odds with his wolf. When his wolf was grieving, Cody went along with him even though he did not have the same feelings for Scarlett as the wolf. When Cody starts desiring Mariska, the wolf does not agree but instead of giving in to his animal, Cody fights with him. The dynamics between the three of them is delightfully written and I found myself liking each character. Kid is a very fascinating character and I look forward to reading about his story when it comes out. As always, Ms. Long draws the reader in with detail and great characters.
When the Fever hits towns it wipes out nearly anyone. The few that do survive are called the Fevered. The fevered have unusual gifts that make them outcasts. Nobody can explain the fever or the survivors. One of the fevered, Cody, has left home. His wolf is grieving the loss of his chosen mate. He ends up tagging along with Kid and he and the wolf make it their duty to protect Kid. Mariska, the gypsy princess cares for her people with a passion but she does not feel that her father should pick her husband. After Cody and Kid save them from marauding Indians her father chooses Cody because Cody has shown his strength and power. Fearing she has no choice, she makes a decision that will change her life forever as well as Cody’s. As their mutual passion and love grow, the wolf becomes more agitated. Can she gain acceptance from the wolf or will the wolf’s anger split them apart?
When the spirit fever struck a town, a village or an outpost, it left few if any survivors. The white man blamed the Indian saying they used their mojo on them. The Indians blamed the white man for angering the spirits. The survivors knew it didn’t matter. The Fevered were forever changed.
