The Rogue You Know by Shana Galen
If you like your historical romance novels on the lighter side of things, with humor and little dash of danger and adventure, you really must check out the Covent Garden Cubs series by Shana Galen.
This second book in the series reconnects us with Susanna, Dane’s sister, and Gideon, one of Marlowe's old running buddies from her days as a cub, as well as the Susanna's mother, a woman I absolutely loathed in the first book of the series.
Susanna has been so closely guarded by her mother growing up she feels like a caged bird. Now that Dane has married a woman with a tainted reputation, her mother is worse than ever. She can't even go the ladies room unattended. When she catches Gideon red handed trying to steal a valuable necklace, she seizes the opportunity, forcing him to help her run away from her life in order to find the answers to why she can never manage to please her mother.
This book tells the story of two people desperately trying to escape the strictures keeping them from living their lives to the fullest and from personal growth and success. For Gideon his freedom hinges on one last heist, and for Susanna it means breaking free from her domineering mother.
As we watch Gideon lead Susanna toward her desired location and hopefully to much needed answers, the two pontificate over their class divisions, trade sharp barbs, challenge their vocabulary, encounter danger and adventure, and learn that love knows no boundaries, cares nothing about class, money, or polite society. The heart wants what it what’s or in this case who it wants.
I do highly recommend reading the first book in this series, so that you understand more of Gideon's background, and his relationship with Marlowe. This second book lacks a bit of the depth the first book had, and is not as strong of an outing, but the dialogue between Susanna and Gideon sparkles and is laugh out loud funny at times.
Susanna was a little silly at first, but she grew on me with her ever present optimism and fast thinking, Gideon was a little hard to warm up to at first, but he grew on me as the story progressed, but, it was “Beauty” the dog who stole the show and was a real hero and match maker. One of the most rewarding parts of the book was the stunning transformation of Susanna's mother and the healing between mother and daughter that resulted from it.
Overall this book is highly entertaining, humorous, and action packed and so much fun! If you are looking for something a tad whimsical without a lot of historical detail, heavy drama or angst, this is the book for you. 4 stars
