Set in the town of Lavender, located in the Hill Country of Texas, the Bad Luck Cat Mystery series centers around Sabrina Tate, a mystery writer staying at her Aunt’s Rowe’s vacation rental place with her black cat, aptly named Hitchcock, while she works on her second novel.
However, Sabrina is having a hard time focusing on her writing because Aunt Rowe and her friends have signed up to compete in the Texas Hill Country Senior Pro-Rodeo, and Sabrina is worried about their safety, but when Chrystal, a local business owner turns up dead, Aunt Rowe’s friend, Pearl, becomes the prime suspect. So, with the help of detective Hitchcock, Sabrina puts her amateur sleuthing skills to work in order to clear Pearl’s name and hopefully catch the real murderer.
This book just has my name written all over it. I am from Texas, love the Hill Country, love cats, and have a special place in my heart for the black ones. So, it goes without saying, I was immediately drawn to this series.
While there are many cozy mysteries out there featuring cats, a lot of them are too ridiculous to take seriously, but that is not the case with this series. Hitchcock is a most unusual black cat, and does indeed seem to have a certain knack for showing up in the right place at the right time to deliver clues and point Sabrina in the right direction. But, he doesn’t talk or have human thoughts, he’s just a super smart cat with perhaps a tiny amount of magical qualities, who certainly doesn’t deserve his bad luck moniker.
The mystery is very intelligent, puzzling, and kept me guessing all the way to the end. I love the characters in the story, especially Aunt Rowe, who is an inspiration, even if she is roping goats, a topic Sabrina and I happen to agree on.
I appreciate the focus the author puts on the stigma associated with black cats and her wry humor when addressing silly superstitions.
I believe Hitchcock and Sabrina make a wonderful detective team and can’t wait read about their next big case.
This series is well written and thoroughly entertaining.
If you enjoy cozy mysteries, I highly recommend this series!!

While the townsfolk think the bad luck cat has struck again, Sabrina suspects there might be something more murderous afoot.
