Sweet Treason

I have read Gail's novels in the past and really enjoyed them. This one was just OK. The story got off to a slow start and it was only as I got to nearly the half-way point that things really got moving. The story had a lot of potential and there were some tense moments, but not enough to propel the book onto a higher level. The romance was also a little bland. I'm not sure why, but the chemistry seemed a little off. I did like the ending and thought the author tied everything up very nicely. I enjoyed the book well enough, but there wasn't anything here that went above and beyond. This author as done much better work in the past. I will give this one 3 stars.

During the revolutionary war, Emily Nevins is forced to do the unthinkable to save her family home and protect her sister. She gets involved in smuggling and then finds herself in a real bind when Ryan Sutton, an American spy forces her to hide him on her farm. With a gun to her back, she covers for him when searchers show up looking for him, but now Ryan can claim she was complicit in the treason. If that wasn't bad enough, Emily is being forced to go to London in order to find a suitable husband. Naturally, things go from bad to worse when Ryan and Emily encounter one another once more.

There are no doubts that Emily and Ryan are physically attracted to each other, but because of their political stances among many other things, the two do not seem compatible in any other way. With the threat of having their secrets exposed, the price they will pay to stay alive could cost them their chance for happiness together.
