Cozy fans should be lining up for this new series filled with zany characters and coupled with the fascinating art of clock making, and small town charm.
When Ruth's grandfather, whom she calls G.T., passes away suddenly, she returns to Orchard, Massachusetts and discovers she was bequeathed Grandpa Thom's clock making shop “The Cog & Sprocket” along with a cat named Bezel. But, once she learns how G.T. died, she's determined to find out who-and-why someone is stealing clocks from the shop, which in turn led to G.T.'s death.
Arriving a little late to the cozy mystery party, I often struggle to find a series that doesn't already have twenty chapters under its belt. So, when I noticed this book was a first in a new series, I grabbed it up in a hurry, and I am so happy I did.
Clock making is very interesting and probably, in this digital age, becoming somewhat of a lost art. I could see the shop in my mind's eye and envision all those wonderful clocks ready to be precision timed and restored.
Orchard, like many small towns, is laden with buried secrets and disagreements over the town's future. With Ruth having left Orchard for a while, she's finding that while there are familiar faces, there are new ones too, and the town has really changed since she was last there. So, without knowing what her future holds, Ruth begins putting G.T's shop back in order and trying to discover why he died. To that end, we meet the residents of Orchard, learn about their struggles and see them come together to help Ruth adjust, decide her future, and gain closure.
Being the first book in a series, there is some necessary time spent introducing the cast of characters and setting the stage for future installments. However, the mystery is still at the heart of the story, and is a real puzzler.
I enjoyed meeting Ruth and Bezel and am really looking forward to more of her adventures in the future. This is a very solid start to a new series and I predict it will gain a loyal following in no time.
