Island of Secrets

When Lila's roomate, Cassie, asked her to take over a journalist job for her because she is injured, Lila reluctantly agrees. It never occurs to Lila that the infamous Shane Alexander would chose her over all the other famous faces on board his boat that day for an exclusive stay on his island. Shane needs some positive press after he restores his old family home and intends to use it for a resort. After a guest reported the place was haunted, Shane needs a little damage control, which is why he invited the press and chose one person to stay and write a story about the resort…hopefully a positive story and interview.

While traveling to Shane's home, Lila finds a note and a beautiful ring. Trying on the ring was a temptation Lila couldn't pass up. When she finds herself suddenly transported back to the late 1700's and once more is face to face with Shane Alexander, Lila has no idea what to make of the situation. She must somehow find a way back to her own time.

Meanwhile, in present day, Shane thinks he has lost his mind when his guest literally disappears before his own eyes. He begins a frantic search for her that will take him on a journey into the past and his own heritage to discover the secrets and sins of a long ago time.

People that know me well will tell you I never pass up a novel that has the word Gothic in the description. I don't mean Gothic in the way so many today think of the genre, I mean the more traditional Gothic mystery/romance novels. The description of this book had me thinking I may have stumbled upon an authentic modern day Gothic story. While there were some Gothic elements to the story, such as the big house and a damsel in distress, a mystery, a romance, and a mild supernatural element, I don't know that I would call this one Gothic in the true sense of the word. It was a good effort, however, it fell just a bit short of its goal.

The time travel element was a nice touch, but it got a little confusing at times. Characters from the past and present and their motives and goals overlapped and for some reason the whole thing just didn't come together as smoothly as it could have.

Shane in the past and Shane in the present didn't exactly match up in personality and the romance was incredibly rushed. The mystery was the glue that held the story together. A long held theory of what had happened in the family's past is put to rest and an old ghost will now be able to rest in peace.

This was a rather ambitious undertaking for the author. It's obvious she has a great imagination and a love for bygone genre, but if I were to place this book in a category I would have to go with Time Travel Paranormal Romance. While there were some areas that needed to be tightened up a little, the book was still an enjoyable enough read.

I give this one 3 stars.
