What a delightful trip to the past! I love cookbooks and have collected them for years. The Frugal Housewife transported me back to different world. The author advocates living within one's means and wasting nothing. Helpful hints and frugal recipes abound. It's simply amazing to me how strange some of the tips are, but most are simple common sense ideas. For example, "As a substitute for coffee, some use dry brown bread crusts and roast them. " is very odd, however," Children can very early be taught take care of all their own clothes." is still relevant today. We do not live in that world anymore yet it is fascinating to look back. From simple soap making to the use for any part of an animal, the author strives to show the women of that time a way live frugally but not miserly. It's a truly entertaining read whose message is as timely now as it was in 1829.
Lydia Maria Child was ahead of her time when she wrote The Frugal Housewife. She offer tips, tricks and advice to women who want to get the most out of what they have. A great lesson in history and reminder for everyone about the ways in which our lives have changed.

This edition of The Frugal Housewife was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas, a Revolutionary War patriot and successful printer and publisher, the society is a research library documenting the lives of Americans from the colonial era through 1876. The society collects, preserves, and makes available as complete a record as possible of the printed materials from the early American experience. The cookbook collection comprises approximately 1,100 volumes.
