“Zen Dreams: Pads of Color” is a pad of nicely thick sheets published by Barron’s that can be colored. Many of the drawings have an Asian flavor, with several depicting Buddha or some variation thereof. There is an intriguing variation of the same flower that is depicted in three different styles, which not only gives a vastly different picture to start with, but allows one to appreciate the value of negative space.
The intricate drawings provide a canvas for letting one’s artistic bent flourish, as one can color as much or as little of the page provided as one wants. I was particularly intrigued by the preponderance of black ink on some of the pages because that changes the character and color of the drawing once colored ink is applied. Those darker drawings are best approached with colored pens or markers and a beautifully lacy effect can be achieved provided one uses that commodity carefully and stays within the lines. I discovered how important a good light source is because I was less than careful at coloring an intricate tracery one night, only to discover how different that side looked the next day! Another fun side effect of using markers is to observe how the color bleeds through if a thinner sheet of paper is used.
I think this tablet’s approximately 8”x8” size is perfect for providing entertainment without overwhelming one at the enormity of the task. A few of the drawings are a little amorphous for my tastes and I would prefer a translation of the Asian character depicted, but overall, I found this to be a beautiful and fun collection and I look forward to many hours of enjoyment.
