Wicked Embers

A Souls of Fire Novel, #2

This paranormal story blends a variety of mythological paradigms, scientific postulations, and an intriguing combination of beings. The concept of vampires versus elemental fae and a virus that changes the inherent nature of beings added to a creature that walks on backward-facing feet provides a myriad of imaginative and exciting scenarios. There are very exciting fight scenes but one should be warned that some of the events are definitely not for the squeamish.

Emberly’s very complicated romantic entanglements are a bit uncomfortable for me, as it is difficult to picture an outcome that will be happy for all of those involved, and the dichotomy between what her nature requires and where her heart wants to go is troubling. I think that this book would be difficult to read without having read the story that came before because there are so many threads that are entangled and I think it is important to get a clearer picture of the various players involved. I am very intrigued by this perspective on phoenixes and their powers and limitations, and I look forward to following the journey being taken, especially since there are so many dangling threads that still need to be resolved.

“Wicked Embers” by Keri Arthur is part of the ‘Fireborn’ series that centers around Emberly Pearson, a phoenix who can take human form. She has gone into partnership with a fire Fae, Jackson Miller, has a phoenix mate named Rory, and still mourns her lost love affair with Sam Turner, who’s a cop on the Paranormal Investigations Team. The threat of an insidious virus that causes something called the Crimson Death mobilizes multiple factions with different agendas but there is even more danger from a mysterious entity that can change its shape, whose predation is being dreamed by Emberly. Unfortunately, that may not be enough to keep her and her allies alive, let alone give them enough strength to defeat their enemies, who seem to be multiplying exponentially.
