Viper Moon

A Dark Huntress Novel, #1

Viper Moon by Lee Roland is the introduction to Cassandra Archer, Huntress for the Earth Mother. Having been chosen to rescue children from the monsters present in the eerie section of Duivel, Missouri known as the Barrows, Cassandra has learned the proper weapons and attitude to cope with both the human and non-human creatures that populate that area. She has been somewhat content to share quarters with only a trio of unlikely sidekicks until straightlaced Detective Flynn enters her life in a desperate search for his young sister. Cassandra has also been tasked to rescue the young son of crime boss Carlos Dacardi, a man who is much more likely to believe in monsters and who may be just as dangerous as they are but is useful for his contacts. The mysterious Michael may be more frightening as an ally than any of the other dangers that Cassandra confronts regularly but there are many obstacles to overcome as the auspicious dark moon approaches. Cassandra must marshal her resources and determine who will best aid her in preventing the destruction of the town even as she struggles to deal with her attraction to the dangerous males in her life.

A fascinating new kick-butt heroine is on the scene of urban fantasy. A disconcerting melange of potential allies who each have very different assets provide spice and variety to the story. Cassandra does an excellent job of navigating the perilously thin line between legality and expediency but that does complicate her relationships. Plenty of action combined with intriguing characters (particularly enjoyed the delivery service provided by Horus) make this an excellent introduction to the series.
