“Vengeance Moon” by Lee Roland is part of her ‘Earth Witches’ series and centers on Madeline Corso who has been pursuing her goal of killing her parents’ murderers for the past nine years. A curse conferred by her dead mother allowed Madeline to relive the murders that changed her life forever and burned the images of the perpetrators into her mind’s eye while conferring physical changes on her body. Carelessness while performing the restitution compelled by her mother’s spell causes Madeline to be imprisoned and subsequently remanded to the austere Sisters of Justice organization. The harsh training meted out by members of the organization teaches Madeline formidable fighting skills while refining her rage and seething emotions into yet another weapon. Her release to perform a task on behalf of the Earth Mother results in her presence in Duivel, MO, a town that has a frightening section warded from normal human senses which is ruled by a demon. A taciturn guide, a powerful witch, remarkably sentient lizard creatures, and a couple of priceless weapons become important to Madeline’s quest but the greatest impact comes from an alluring and mesmerizing male named Michael whose angelic facade may or not accurately reflect his true nature.
An intriguing and dark look at a world that is precariously balanced and a heroine who is still able to show the softer emotions even though she has been tortured for almost a decade. The complex relationship that Madeline has with all of those around her make it a bit difficult to evaluate loyalties and sometimes causes one to be distrustful of some of the pat solutions being offered. It seemed that the actions of the Sisters are inconsistent between one moment or another but they are definitely strong influences on Madeline’s life. There are quite a few mysteries left unexplained and Madeline seems to have more lives than a cat but the tale was full of action and provided an entertaining read. Hopefully the sequel will help resolve some of the questions that arose in this book.
