No Rival, #1

This contemporary erotic story is an unexpected combination of heat and angst that makes it a somewhat difficult read for me. There are twists and turns that transform the sensual highs into emotional lows and make it a challenge for me to establish rapport with the characters. My feeling is that there is too much inconsistency in the behavior of certain key players and there is a bit too much impulsiveness guiding their actions. The betrayal and subsequent reactions seem to be contradictory to the intense connection that is initially established so the story doesn’t quite ring true to me even though I liked some of the characters and would love to see more about what happens to them.

“Unsurpassed” by Charity Parkerson is the first story in the ‘No Rival’ series and introduces children’s RN Aubree Holiday, whose interest in her self-defense instructors, Max and Ryan, takes an unexpected turn when they invite her to join them at a weekend event hosted by MMA celebrity, Drew Alexander. The sizzling encounters that she experiences have unexpected consequences and her life is turned upside-down when she makes an unwelcome discovery and must make a choice that will affect multiple lives, not necessarily for the better.
