“The Study of Seduction” is a poignant historical romance that has the familiar theme of a search for an appropriate spouse among those attending activities during the Season but draws in both a creepy persistent suitor and a contradictory attitude toward the dance of spouse-hunting. The author does a wonderful job of gradually revealing more and more clues to give insight into the motivation of various characters and keeps one intrigued by the story. The friends-to-lovers progression is surprisingly accelerated at first glance, until the surprising developments short-circuit things.
There were serious undertones to the issues that Lady Clarissa has to overcome, both from the past and the present. The care and patience demonstrated by Edwin made me fall in love with him and it was heartwarming to watch him cherish Clarissa and build up her confidence and gain her trust. This story has the elements that I enjoy most about historical romances, including the elegant dance of manners and obligations, the contrast between the public and private faces, and the fascinating social interactions, but it also has aspects that are unfortunately very relevant to current life as well. There are fun twists to the story that show how things can get misinterpreted if insufficient information is available, and interesting elements such as Edwin’s hobby, plus, both a wonderful romance and an exciting mystery. This story provided a wonderful way to while away a lazy afternoon and I look forward to reading about other members of the Sinful Suitors club.
Sabrina Jeffries’ “The Study of Seduction” is part of ‘The Sinful Suitors’ series and centers around Lady Clarissa Lindsey, who fortunately has an inheritance to survive on, but has been hounded by a persistent Frenchman who has both diplomatic immunity and an inability to understand her refusal of his suit. Edwin Barlow, Earl of Blakeborough, has agreed to escort her as a favor to her cousin, but doesn’t expect his ongoing fascination for her feisty personality and curiosity about her nature to deepen into respect and a desire to provide safety and security for her, which may be a more dangerous goal than he realizes.
A marriage of convenience ignites into a passionate love affair in the hotly anticipated second novel in New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Sabrina Jeffries’s addictive Sinful Suitors series!
When Edwin Barlow, the Earl of Blakeborough, agrees to help his best friend’s impetuous ward, Lady Clarissa Lindsey, in her time of need, he knows he’s in for trouble. He’s been hunting for someone to wed, and she’ll just get in the way. Although captivated by the witty, free-spirited beauty, he fears she’d be all wrong as a wife...if she would even take such a gruff cynic for her husband. Yet he wants nothing more than to have her for his own.
Clarissa has no intention of marrying anyone—not Edwin, whom she’s sure would be an overbearing husband, and certainly not the powerful French diplomat stalking her. But when matters escalate with the diplomat, she chooses Edwin’s gallant offer of a marriage between friends in hopes that it will deter her stalker. She expects nothing more than an amiable union, but their increasingly tempestuous kisses prove more than she bargained for. When her stalker’s vow to expose the lovers’ deepest secrets threatens to destroy their blossoming attraction, will their tenuous bond withstand public ruin, or will Edwin lose all that’s important to him to protect his bride?
