The Scottish Duke

“The Scottish Duke” by Karen Ranney follows Lorna Gordon who goes through several radical life changes but doesn’t lose her sense of daring, which could result in more of a setback than anticipated. I was impressed by her strength of character although her common sense and pride sometimes leave a little to be desired as far as I was concerned. The hero’s mother is wonderful and the adjustment of the entire household to the changes is intriguing to watch, although I did want to smack a certain obnoxious sister-in-law, lol. The evolution of Alex’s character and the description of his passionate scientific pursuits was fascinating and it was great to watch the way it becomes integrated into the story as an essential tool and foreshadows the significance such a process eventually will exert. I enjoy the way the stories by this author blend historical elements, tragic histories, and passionate characters and this is another delightful addition to her collection of tales.

This historical romance shows how an enterprising maid, Lorna Gordon, finds a daring way to meet the head of the household but doesn’t expect all of the repercussions of attracting the duke’s attention. Alex Russell fulfills his duties as duke and pursues his scientific endeavors but he isn’t truly happy with his life. After enduring a travesty of marriage and its dire outcome, he’s in no hurry to repeat the experience. The consolation prize he seizes after a dire disappointment has unexpected consequences, but it definitely will change his outlook on life—whether he wants it to or not.

Book Blurb for The Scottish Duke

New York Times bestselling author Karen Ranney returns with the first novel in a new series about dashing, charismatic dukes—and the women who tame them…

Though raised as a gentleman’s daughter, Lorna Gordon is obliged to take a position as an upstairs maid at Blackhall Castle when her father dies. Alex Russell, the Duke of Kinross, is the most tempting man she’s ever seen—and completely unattainable—until, at a fancy dress ball, Lorna disguises herself as Marie Antoinette and pursues an illicit tryst…with scandalous consequences. Months after his mysterious seductress disappears, Alex encounters her again. Far from the schemer the distrustful duke assumed her to be, Lorna is fiercely independent and resourceful. She’s the one woman capable of piercing his defenses. But when danger threatens Lorna, Alex must prove himself not just the lover of her fantasies, but the man who will fight to protect her.
