The Liar

This tension-filled story gives a frightening look at the insidious methods an abuser can use to isolate a victim from friends and family. One element was unfortunately a little predictable for me but it was delightful to watch the assimilation of an outsider into the closed-ranks of southern society and the way friends and family drew Shelby back into their embrace. There are wonderful interludes provided by the very different generations as young Callie proffers a marriage proposal and her grandmother proffers protection before Shelby goes on a date. I love the wise-cracking texts that Grift sends the worried mom as he takes on the responsibilities of childcare and the iconic beauty shop hijinks that provide gossip fodder for everyone. There is a satisfying blend of humor, warmth and suspense accompanied by a beautifully evolving romance that makes this another fun read by a very prolific and talented author.

"The Liar" by Nora Roberts is a romantic suspense story that features Shelby Anne Pomeroy, a very young widow who returns to her hometown with her very young daughter Callie, after her world implodes. Drowning in debt yet gamely trying to rebuild her life, she struggles to repair the relationships she has damaged, even as she sustains a series of shocks as she receives more information about her former husband. Griffin Lott (Grift) is enchanted by the young sprite named Callie who has come into his life, even as he seeks to get to know her mother better and gently coax her to regain her confidence and find a way to support herself and her young daughter. Unfortunately, Shelby hasn't left all of her troubles behind and not only her way of life but her life itself may be destroyed if she can't identify her true enemy.
