“The Hero” by Donna Grant is chock full of action, suspense, and alpha males. The females are skilled, but somehow tend to be oblivious to clues that the males pick up on. There is a high level of violence and some sensuality but multiple things didn’t quite gel for me, including the purported skills that Natalie has yet doesn’t apply when looking at the paperwork she has smuggled out of work, not to mention the place she is employed, which seems incongruous in Texas. I think that part of the problem is the challenge of setting up a complex series and introducing the multiple players and threads in a broad enough fashion that it will support the subsequent books.
I like the idea of the three brothers being proficient in different areas of the armed forces and the potential for the women to be their equals, but I was frustrated by the relationships depicted in this story…both familial and romantic. Even the way the brothers are brought back together again after their estrangement seems unnecessarily cruel and inappropriate. The delivery of a highly sensitive and possibly volatile agent through the mail seems improbable and the unsecured transport and increasingly risky handing frustrated me. I was even more astonished when, despite the high likelihood of additional attacks and the ramping up of danger, the heroine prepares for bed wearing a slinky nightgown…great for seduction, not so good for being ready to fight the bad guys! The final frustration is the lack of any real resolution since the cliffhanger is designed to whet one’s appetite for the next book in the series.
There is plenty of danger combined with a passionate reunion of former lovers, but I think one should be prepared to read this with a significant suspension of disbelief and an aim for escapist fantasy adventure.
