I enjoy books that feature a geek although I wish that Chris’ mental attributes were a little better showcased, since it seemed that he was forced into the role of being dependent on others for protection and rescue. It was a little difficult to believe in the instant attraction that burned hot so quickly, but there definitely were some deliciously sizzling encounters between the two main characters and I love the island flavor that Jason brings to the relationship. I was impressed that Jason took the time to decide whether he could give his heart wholeheartedly and I liked that Chris found a way to grow and address his insecurities. It would be nice to have a little more depth to the characters but the combination of heat and danger and the preponderance of sexy males made this an enjoyable story for me. I had no trouble reading this as a stand-alone and would love to read more about ‘Herc’s Mercs’.
“The Harder They Fall” by Ari McKay is part of the ‘Herc’s Mercs’ series and is a contemporary m/m romance that centers around Chris Hardison, geek and computer security expert for an organization called Hercules Security, and Jason Hekili, who is both an EMT and an entertainer. Their instant attraction is mutual, but Chris has past issues that cause the relationship to implode. Fortunately, hurt feelings don’t prevent Jason from being willing to protect the man who broke his heart, now he just has to keep him alive long enough for them to figure out what they truly mean to one another.
Chris Hardison never expected the simple consulting gig to put him on somebody’s hit list, but Hercules Security’s resident computer whiz never does anything by halves. Now he’s on the run, guarded by gorgeous Jason Hekili, the newest member of Herc’s crew. But Chris and Jason have a past, and holing up in a safe house together is as complicated as it is dangerous.
Jason still wants Chris even though his broken heart hasn’t healed. He isn’t sure he can trust Chris, but when a crime syndicate targets Chris for assassination, Jason has to put his life on the line to protect Chris or risk losing their second chance for happiness before it even begins.
