The Blinding Knife

Another intricately developed fantasy tale that provides a glimpse of a remarkable world. The inventive distributions of power between different colors is explored further as Gavin grapples with his troubles and Kip tries to learn how he can use the powers that he does have. This particular book gives more insight into Kip and highlights the manipulations of his grandfather even as one grows to appreciate the remarkable ability of all of those in the Guile family. The continued paradigm shifts make one ponder who is truly the villain and who is just reacting to the situation at hand while the threat hanging over Gavin’s head becomes inescapable. The training exercises to weed out the finest warriors provide intriguing insights into the various strata of society even as one learns how Kip has managed to survive so long and I was delighted by some of his solutions to his challenges. Some developments continue to frustrate me as I am an incurable optimist but the tale is as enthralling as the first in the series (“The Black Prism”) and I anxiously await the next in the series.

“The Blinding Knife” by Brent Weeks is Book 2 of the ‘Lightbringer’ series and continues the saga of the intriguing man known as the Prism or Gavin Guile. The story starts immediately after the events in the first book, “The Black Prism”, and Gavin struggles to find a safe place to lead the multitudes who fled the destruction of their city. His stark realization of his increasing handicaps and the sobering conclusion drawn from them govern his actions even though those around him are not gifted with his secrets. An all too perceptive oracle helps direct some of his decisions even though they are not appreciated by those impacted, particularly his bastard son Kip and the Blackguard Karris. Kip undergoes the training and testing required to become one of the elite Blackguard force and starts developing a reputation of his own, even as he struggles to survive interacting with his grandfather, Andross Guile. Andross, political machinations threaten to make their entire society even more susceptible to the Color Prince, who is determined to wreak his revenge and destroy the entire structure of the Seven Satrapies. Gavin must find a way to defend his people despite his increasing handicaps which may prevent him from achieving the seven goals he has set for himself.
