The Black Prism

Lightbringer, #2

This is a very imaginative fantasy tale that explores the magic of being able to manipulate colors. Each color provides strength of a different type and influences the user’s emotions in a distinct way even as it marks them physically. Plenty of twists and a labyrinthine connection of the characters which makes it difficult to distinguish between villains and heroes. An obese boy has a pivotal role and a murky background but is ill-prepared for the radical shifts in his life and loyalties. The book can get a bit ponderous but the imagery is vivid and the characters are intriguing. A wonderful beginning to a mind-stretching series.

“The Black Prism” by Brent Weeks is the first novel in the ‘Lightbringer’ series. It follows the manipulations of the person occupying the role of the ‘Prism’, Gavin Guile, as he juggles a myriad of tasks using his remarkable ability to manipulate all colors. Added to this is the brother that he has secretly imprisoned, the son that he never knew existed who doesn’t quite seem to fit the mold for the Guile family...oh, and the fact that he knows that his lifespan is limited and he may not have enough time to achieve all of the tasks that he still needs to complete. Then there's the problem of the existence of another faction that wants to destroy everything he and his predecessors have ever accomplished and Gavin finds that he has a major struggle on his hands fighting enemies both near and far.
