“Tempest: All-New Tales of Valdemar” is an anthology edited by Mercedes Lackey. It is so fun being immersed in stories that explore the various aspects of this universe that have been developed over the years. I was particularly fond of the stories that remind us of the common folk who populate the world and the things they can contribute, such as those found in Elizabeth Vaughan’s “Unimagined Consequences”, the blind heroine of Janny Wurts’ “Girl Without the Gifts”, or Michele Lang’s “Sparrow’s Gift”. I love the idea of Mindspeech with animals, so I was delighted by Elisabeth Waters’ “A Trip of Goats” (and what an appropriate sobriquet, lol). Surprisingly, I had the most trouble appreciating “Ripples and Cracks” by Mr. Dixon and his mate, Ms. Lackey…perhaps because it’s been so long since I read the series which featured the Owl Knight Darian and that which starred the vain Black Gryphon, Kelvren, although it did make me want to dig out my copies and reread all of them, lol. This was a wonderful visit to the various lands and peoples of Valdemar and the surrounding lands and gave me a chance to renew my acquaintance with some of my favorite fantasy authors as well as finding new ones to investigate.

This fantasy collection of 22 short stories provides glimpses of the tapestry of the world that includes Valdemar, the Vale, Karse, and other exotic lands. There are stories of the life of the commoners who deal with privation and oppression, glimpses of Heralds and the challenge of coping with monotony as well as the responsibilities that rest on their shoulders, sometimes very uneasily. The magical creatures who have become part of the lexicon for this world are featured in many of the short stories, with the final story penned by the talented husband and wife team who have provided the tapestry that they have generously allowed others to weave stories around.

Book Blurb for Tempest

The Heralds of Valdemar are the kingdom’s ancient order of protectors. They are drawn from all across the land, from all walks of life, and at all ages—and all are Gifted with abilities beyond those of normal men and women. They are Mindspeakers, FarSeers, Empaths, ForeSeers, Firestarters, FarSpeakers, and more. These inborn talents—combined with training as emissaries, spies, judges, diplomats, scouts, counselors, warriors, and more—make them indispensable to their monarch and realm. Sought and Chosen by mysterious horse-like Companions, they are bonded for life to these telepathic, enigmatic creatures. The Heralds of Valdemar and their Companions ride circuit throughout the kingdom, protecting the peace and, when necessary, defending their land and monarch.

Now, twenty-three authors ride with Mercedes Lackey to her magical land of Valdemar, adding their own unique voices to the Heralds, Bards, Healers, and other heroes of this beloved fantasy realm.

Join Elizabeth Vaughan, Fiona Patton, Jennifer Brozek, Brenda Cooper, Rosemary Edghill, and others in twenty-two original stories, including a brand-new novella by Mercedes Lackey, to Valdemar, where:
