“Shift” is a wonderful young adult paranormal tale that returns one to the eerie world that is populated with children who can interact with ghosts. The author has done a fantastic job of creating a sometimes frightening society that is attempting to understand the significance of the phenomenon known as the ‘Shift’ even as she tells the story of a pair of extraordinary yet ordinary teens. The poignancy of the relationships that Aura has and loses form a realistic counterpoint to the paranormal elements that give this story such individuality even as the reader is inexorably drawn into the emotional and angst-filled life of a high school teenager. Another fantastic addition to an inventive series peopled by intriguing and charismatic beings.
“Shift” by Jeri Smith-Ready is the second book in her ‘Shade Trilogy’ series which is set in a world that is divided into those who are young enough to see ghosts and those who are older and cannot. Aura and Zachary have the distinction of having been born on either side of the time that divides the world and their uniqueness complicates their relationship to one another. The continued presence of Aura’s previous boyfriend provides even more puzzles due to his conversion from ghost to angry shade to ghost and Aura and Zachary struggle to deal with the complications of typical high school rituals even as they research the phenomena which started with their respective births. A search for Aura’s roots has unexpected consequences but also results in significant progress in the investigation itself. An enthralling sequel that will make one immediately reach for the final tale in the trilogy, “Shine”.
