“Shattered Spear” by Jack Campbell is another great addition to a long-running series spin-off. There have been times when I felt that no progress was being made—either with the society that Iceni and Drakon have taken it upon themselves to reform, or their relationship, or the struggle against the Syndicate and the enigma aliens. The multitude of mysteries that were still up in the air were also frustrating, especially with regard to certain characters whose fate was unconfirmed.
This story was a nice blend of character study and space opera, with the startling discovery about the enigmas’ capabilities, the ongoing tests of loyalty, life-threatening challenges, and the conferring of trust without proof that it was warranted. The battles were exciting, as always, but I most enjoyed seeing relationships deepen and other connections get established. This is a well-built universe with a multitude of stories to follow, and I am always impressed by the myriad of military details artfully conveyed. I am happy things are progressing, and I look forward to watching events play out in future stories.
This science fiction/space opera story is part of ‘The Lost Stars’ series which spun off from the long-running ‘The Lost Fleet’ series. President Iceni and General Drakon have continued working together to benefit the citizens of Midway, but unpleasant developments make them wonder how long they’re going to be able to rebuild and grow, particularly if the deadly enigma aliens are no longer constrained to use existing Gates. There is not only the threat of the Syndicate, but also a challenge by Grainaile Imallye, who is trying to establish her own power base. Added to this are the challenges of avoiding assassination, adding to the mystery of whether reports of the deaths of certain associates have been greatly exaggerated.
The New York Times bestselling author of The Lost Fleet returns to the “strong saga”* of a rebellion against a totalitarian regime and the determination of two people to create a better future in the farthest reaches of the colonized galaxy...
The Syndicate Worlds continue to splinter as more star systems pledge allegiance to President Gwen Iceni, General Artur Drakon, and the new government they’re establishing at Midway. But the toxic legacy of Syndicate rule continues to undermine their efforts as the rebels encounter difficulty trusting one another and believing their new leaders’ promises of freedom from tyranny.
Before Iceni and Drakon can put their house in order, they must deal with an even greater threat. An enigma warship has appeared and vanished near a Syndic colony. If the aliens are capable of jumping into other human-occupied star systems, then billions of people could be vulnerable to a hostile invasion fleet anywhere they choose to strike.
But an even greater vulnerability lies with Iceni and Drakon, as a once-trusted adviser-turned-saboteur plans revenge...
