Serpent's Kiss

A Novel of the Elder Races, #3

Serpent's Kiss by Thea Harrison is the intriguing story of Rune Ainissethai, a gryphon who acts as First Sentinel to Drago and Carling Severan, vampyre, abdicated Queen, and Nightkind Councilor of the Elder tribunal. Rune offered an open-ended favor to the powerful vampyre and she calls him to her mysterious island to collect. Carling is at the end of her considerably long life and is experiencing the apathy common to those in that condition but she has an atypical interest in the online gaming, music afficionado Wyr named Rune who seems to be an enigma packaged into a riddle. The fascination that Rune developed for her even while he was in the midst of a crisis that impacted heavily upon his fellow Sentinel has caused him to persist in interacting with the anomalous and extremely dangerous Carling. A puzzle of monumental importance will be need to be unravelled in order to deal with a crisis that will not only change Carling's life but may impact all Nightkind.

A fascinating addition to the mesmerizing series about the Elder Races which includes Dragon Bound and Storm's Heart. The mystical powers possessed by and inherent in the charismatic beings who operate within and alongside the mortal world are juxtaposed with an integration into a mundane world that produced Deadheads, World of Warcraft and iPhones. The author deftly weaves a fantastical romance that spans generations and blends reality with creatures such as medusae, dragons, and djinni while never losing her facility for interjecting wryly sarcastic remarks into emotionally fraught situations that keep the reader from being overwhelmed with sentimentality. A delightful read with intriguing potential for many more highly anticipated tales.
