This contemporary romance has a wonderful cast of characters and immerses the reader in a small town with beautiful scenery but its share of tragedy. The complex history that ties the main characters together is heart-wrenching and definitely is an apparently insurmountable obstacle to overcome, but it was gratifying to see the care that has been offered to Lily without her awareness and lovely to watch her relationship slowly blossom from the ashes of tragedy.
This is a great introduction to a new series, with a very nice framework established for stories involving others in this picturesque town. It is always impressive to me that this author is able to create a network of intriguing characters who seem like folks who could be friends and neighbors if I lived in such a small town, and it is always a delicious experience to follow the rising heat that accompanies the flowering relationship.
The combination of humor, self-deprecating but strongly alpha male, and strong yet vulnerable woman is always a winner for me and this, combined with the mystery that is yet to be solved about other members of the Kincaid family makes this a great read that has me anxious for more.
“Second Chance Summer” by Jill Shalvis is the first book of the ‘Cedar Ridge’ series, set in Cedar Ridge, Colorado. This reunion story follows Lily Danville, who has returned after a ten year absence and is trying to rebuild her career which has been sabotaged through an unwise decision. She also has unfinished business and unresolved emotional issues that she fled from, not least of which are those associated with Aidan Kincaid. Aidan has devoted his life to rescuing others, but Lily may be his biggest and most important challenge.
Cedar Ridge, Colorado, is famous for crisp mountain air, clear blue skies, and pine-scented breezes. And it's the last place Lily Danville wants to be. But she needs a job, and there's an opening at the hottest resort in her hometown. What has her concerned is the other hot property in Cedar Ridge: Aidan Kincaid-firefighter, rescue worker, and heartbreaker. She never could resist that devastating smile . . .
The Kincaid brothers are as rough and rugged as the Rocky Mountains they call home. Aidan has always done things his own way, by his own rules. And never has he regretted anything more than letting Lily walk out of his life ten years ago. If anyone has ever been in need of rescuing, she has. What she needs more than anything are long hikes, slow dances, and sizzling kisses. But that can only happen if he can get her to give Cedar Ridge-and this bad boy-a second chance . . .
